Mosaic organisms

Today's mosaic inspiration is a work of Jane du Rand. I have never seen something like this before.A rather edgy demonstration of how mosaic can be applied to translate all aspects of life.

note: Mosaic organisms is the title of this post and not the series of mosaics. It would be interesting to know if the artist has given a title to these pieces.

Mosaic baby steps

I stumbled upon Candace Bahouth's mosaics before but I never kept the name. I remember the shoes, the furniture and the tapestry. "Mosaic baby steps" continues along the theme of "It gets better". A mommy's world. Cause we need tenderness.

Have a lovely week!

Goldfinger

mosaic work by Nirit Keren - taken from Pinterest

Nirit Keren is a mosaic artist who sets out to explore the medium in a way that is bold and very personal. I will give you one good reason why she is an inspiration to me: She's not superfluous. Eloquence and minimalism is the trend I am more inclined to be inspired by. Somethings are implied, not shown (off). Modesty is good when coupled with superb craftsmanship.

Let me go wild

Show some ethnic love and be versatile with this unusual pair of earrings. Wear these with anything. From plain and casual to chic. Tribal inspired, turquoise, lovely earth-sea blend and a peculiar "cherry on the top" addition in the middle. Actually it's red resin. By SimoneSutcliffe.

intoxicate yourself.

I love this ring and how Simona Canino has managed to blend amethyst, mirror mosaic and smalti here. What else can I say other than PERFECT. And some info about the meaning of the word *amethyst* from Wikipedia:

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. The name comes from the Ancient Greek ἀ a- ("not") and μέθυστος methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.

Interesting, right?

the perfect gift for a #mosaic art blogger

I have just received the most wonderful gift through the post today and I am so HAPPY and GRATEFUL to my friend Simona who thought of creating this for me. I can't believe how beautiful and lightweight these earrings are! Her idea to create her own settings using terracotta is unique and is certainly a definite plus for those who want to ear mosaic jewellery but have been reluctant to do so because of their weight. Also, they are of a perfect size. Not too small, not too big!

And for those of you interested in buying something created by Simona, please note that for the month of DECEMBER there's FREE SHIPPING!

Here's the link to Simona's shop: www.etsy.com/shop/imosaicidisimona

THANK YOU SIMONA.

Authentic and trendy #mosaic jewelery by Simona Canino

Some time ago on this blog, I featured an interview with Simona Canino, an Italian mosaic artist and graduate from Spilimbergo Mosaic School. It was such great news to hear about her Etsy store!

Her work is distinguished by an authentic and versatile style. Some of them are trendy and perfect to wear during the day and for all occasions, whilst others - like this superb pair of earrings featured above - can complement a more dressy outfit - especially a black dress - and make a sensational statement.

Oh and....apart from the mosaic decoration of her accessories, Simona also creates her own settings (bezels)!

Brava Simona!

Be sure to check out her shop I MOSAICI DI SIMONA.

Have a good weekend!

Chimeras and mosaics
(Phenomena - National Geographic)

An exciting scientific post blending mosaic and SCIENCE. In the article, mosaic art is used as comparison. Check it out HERE.

Video
Sicis O'clock Collection

If you have been following what Sicis has been doing in recent years, this video will confirm your wildest guess. The mirco and nano mosaics here are exquisite. Watch out for the Russian inspiration.

Artist
Samantha Holmes

Samantha Holmes is an exceptional artist for the simple materials she uses and the way she breaths new and meaningful life into them. She actually gives them a new identity. The thought process she uses is distinctively rooted into a philosophical approach to life. Another reason why I love her work is that she is using my favourite material: paper. Samantha will be one of the artists to exhibit in the RavennaMosaico festival this year.

A presto!

Flying, falling or both

Your rise could induce a fall.
And your fall could be the cause of a rise.

You might be flying but you could also be falling or both.

You are wondering if this confusion is because your dreams are being dissolved into thin air before they can get the chance to become true.

But don't think about that.
Wait till the winds are not that brutal.
Or until you stop minding the winds.

You will re-emerge.

Tomorrow.

Before sunrise

Before Sunrise - 3D mosaic by Olga Goulandris

Before Sunrise. That's the title of this fantastic 3D mosaic I came across the other day. I was looking for something summery to drop into the blog that had nothing to do with swimming pools cause right now I'm in a "Mountain-Loving" mood and I'll probably be heading to a nice place in Tuscany (not yet as I'm swamped with work) and... this was the perfect piece!

I have asked Olga Goulandris, a mosaic artist from Greece, to say a few words about her piece.

"It's a 3D mosaic, it's as if you are looking at the earth right from above which you have split it open in the middle. I was inspired to create this thinking of other hemisphere and what separates us (sea)".

I find Olga's source of inspiration quite intriguing, an invitation to look beyond, to overcome the tangible, to search for what's "there" that could also be "here".

If you love mosaic(ology) please consider supporting it - Thank you

Please don't stop the music!

When was in my early 20s, I couldn't live a single day without music. I'd put my headphones on and would listen to my favourite tracks. Mostly Depeche Mode. But also Madonna. Occasionally Classical music. There was a time I would listen to Spanish music. It could be while traveling, going to work, doing the housework etc.

A funny thing has been occurring in recent years:
I no longer listen to music on a daily basis the way I did before.
However, I do listen to music but "under special circumstances"; for instance when I need to cheer up or stop thinking or when I'm overwhelmed with emotions (of calm combined with a creative spur or - yes - anger). That's when I turn to music. Not always. But when I do, it works.

Music gives us back some of our lost energy. It creates NEW energy. Music can inspire works of art. For instance, I'd love to create a mosaic inspired by the Dance of the knights (Romeo and Juliet) by Prokofiev, one of my favourite classical pieces. The mosaic I'm thinking of isn't about Romeo and Juliet but it comes from the EMOTIONS when listening to the piece.

Music is a muse who we all need to call as often as we can. She is full of surprises!

This is what Laur Ivanel, architect/mosaicist did. His work is inspired by music AND it's about music! His calling was to create a series of mosaics for an Irish pub in Constanta, Romania, with a music muse as a central theme. The muse spins the music wheel and every part of the work has a story. What's more, during the process, he discovered and fell in love with the song Dancing with the Muse by Chris Spheeeris which helped him to complete the work!

I can almost hear the music in Laur's work, don't you?

It has that NEW energy I was telling you about. I asked him to tell me a few things about his work.

In his own words:

"I like to transform

from what's not so good
into something with life, soul, second chance
where there is a little bit of disharmony to put a touch of care.
It is about care
in fact
I need this
and I prefer to do work with spaces;
spaces have a life and a soul"
